10 Songs About Being Friends With Your Ex in 2022

84 / 100

It’s normal to wonder if you can remain friends with your ex if your relationship ends peacefully. After all, this person is probably someone you actually like and like being with, and who you most likely have common interests, values, and experiences with. Giving up what you had may have felt like throwing out the baby with the bathwater because you two knew that a romantic connection wouldn’t work.

Let’s discuss 10 songs about Being Friends With Your Ex in 2022

1.      Selena Gomez – People You Know

Selena Gomez gives us “People You Know” from her album Rare. With euphoric guitar picks and dramatic backing chords, the song has a modern Pop style. Selena talks about wasting time with the wrong people and how even your closest relationships and friends may change into someone you don’t even recognize.

Selena’s voice carries the entire composition, which, like many of her songs, envelops emotion in a dramatic production. The song nevertheless evokes sadness and introspection despite its more Pop-oriented sound.

2.      Taylor Swift (Feat. Colbie Caillat) – Breathe

Taylor Swift, who is well-known for writing lyrics about previous relationships, is honest in her song “Breathe.” According to my interpretation, the lyrics indicate that no matter what you do or how much you care about someone, they may still reject you.

If the lyrics don’t bring a tear to your eye, the music might do the job. This song’s production is of outstanding quality and effectively manages song progression. With parts that sound like ballads and other parts that seem like a strong Pop hook, Taylor shows her ability to spark your emotions.

3.      FINNEAS – I Lost A Friend

Many listeners comment that this song is fantastic to be left open for personal interpretation because it offers one of the best depictions of what it’s like to lose a buddy. He can be talking about a former closest friend, a former love interest, or even himself.

The lyrics, in my opinion, have something to do with development and success. Some people from your past might not understand or view you the same way as you do as you concentrate on your own life, develop, and become more successful.

4.      Charli XCX (Feat. Sky Ferreira) – Cross You Out

“Cross You Out,” a collaboration between Charlie XCX and Sky Ferreira, with large Pop snares and strong synths that carry the bottom line, bringing up the energy of a Pop ballad. The song, in my opinion, is a reflection of self-improvement.

It’s okay to recognize your faults and those of individuals in your circle, then make the decision to change for the better. The song’s production value remains rather basic, but the slow groove created by the distorted synths and the substantial reverberating drum keeps your head bobbing the entire time. The voices also do a fantastic job of filling the track’s empty space.

5.      Dua Lipa – No Goodbyes

This song is a part of the 2017 self-titled album. The couple in the song is trying to go on with their lives after their love appears to have ended. Even if they have to break up someday, Dua wants them to keep seeing each other.

She doesn’t need to be in the spotlight to bring out their relationship’s problems because she is aware that neither of them is intended to be together. They could play about for one more night since it is dark.

6.       Katy Perry – Small Talk

The song is from the album Smile and was co-written with Charlie Puth (2020). It debuted at #81 on the Hot 100. The song is about a broken relationship where you still periodically run across them. In contrast to your previous private conversations, this one will be awkward and full of small talk.

According to Katy Perry, the song isn’t about someone specifically but was rather inspired by general dialogues and relationship changes.

7.      Gwen Stefani – Cool

This song may be found on her self-titled studio debut. Generally speaking, the song is about a couple who have split up but have reconciled their differences peacefully and are now just glad for one another after finding happiness in their own new relationships.  We get to view a few of the memories the pair made together.

In an interview with Billboard, Gwen stated this about the song:

Lyrically, it has a different perspective on love. Typically you don’t talk about still being friends with somebody that you loved so much who broke your heart. It made so much sense at the time. Not only did I have a lot of guilt doing the record outside of No Doubt because it felt like I was cheating on them, but I also knew I needed to do it. It was always so weird to have been in a band with the person I was pretty much obsessed with and worshipped. Then he broke up with me and we became friends. It was a very complicated situation with Tony. At that point, I just got married, too, so there was a lot of stuff in my brain.”

8.      Justin Bieber – Friends

The song is about maintaining friendship following a breakup. Justin begins by asking how her ex-mother boyfriend’s is doing. He then declares his objectives and makes it clear that he has no hidden goals beyond merely asking whether they may be friends.

Since they are unable to be together romantically, Justin is content to just be friends because he doesn’t want their connection to simply fade away.

9.      Rudimental feat Macklemore, Jess Glynne – These Days

The song generally talks about thinking back on the difficulties of a previous relationship with your ex. You express affection and thanks for the other person’s contribution to helping you find your way in life instead of expressing resentment. Both of you also want to catch up after everything has settled down and laugh about the days you spent together.

Rudimental stated that their friend Dan Caplen, who approached them with the concept, was the source of the song’s inspiration.

10.   Kiana Lede – Ex

In one of her songs, Kiana talks about wanting to maintain a friendship with an ex because she still cares for and loves him. She is beginning to regret her decision to keep some ties with him.

Kiana claimed in an interview that she was the only one in her ex’s life who genuinely cared about him and inquired about his future and quality of life. Despite having troubles with them, she always wants to be there for the people she cares about.
