Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, was chosen as Time magazine’s “Person of the Year” on Wednesday after being one of ten people or organizations that were shortlisted earlier in the week.

Since late February, Zelensky has led Ukraine as it has fought to hold off a full-scale Russian invasion of the nation, making Ukraine a leader on the world stage. He has presided over a series of victories in the war that have mostly prevented Russia from making progress and allowed Ukraine to recapture the land it had lost.
