Marvin Gaye’s wife Janis Hunter Gaye passed away at the age of 66. Hunter Gaye passed away on Saturday, December 3 at her home in Rhode Island, according to her relatives.
No cause of death has been revealed to the public.
Hunter Gaye’s daughter Nona – who is also an actor and singer – shared a tribute to her late mother, writing: “From the time she met my father, she was exposed to the way he saw this world was aching, and she did her best to preserve his legacy as he was taken from us far too early.”
The statement continued: “She took every moment to speak about every word and every note of his music, and she wanted to make sure everyone knew the man she fell in love with.
“I will never get to see her again in this life but know she’s in heaven with my father and a spokesperson for us in spirit.”
They first met in Los Angeles in 1973 while he was recording his album Let’s Get It On, which was later that year published. In tribute to her, Gaye wrote his 1974 song “Jan” to her.
In 1977, the singer of “Sexual Healing,” Hunter Gaye, became his wife. He was 38 while she was 21.
Three years later, in 1981, they got divorced. Gaye was shot and killed by his father in 1984 at the age of 44.
Hunter Gaye continued to manage her daughter’s musical and acting career, which included parts in movies like Ali and Crash.
In her book After the Dance: My Life with Marvin Gaye, released in 2015, Hunter Gaye said that her relationship with the Motown legend was frequently tumultuous and violent.
