Bernard Arnault was born on 5 March 1949, in Roubaix, France. His mother, Marie-Josèphe Savinel, daughter of Étienne Savinel, had a “fascination for Dior”. His father, manufacturer Jean Léon Arnault, a graduate of École Centrale Paris, owned the civil engineering company Ferret-Savinel.

At age 17, he moved to Paris, where he attended École Polytechnique and earned an engineering degree in 1973. In 1976, he graduated from Stanford University with a master’s degree in applied mathematics and economic science. During his education at Stanford, Arnault worked as a night-shift desk clerk at Hotel Tous Rives near Lake Lagunita for one year.

Within the corporation, his first action was to persuade his father to dissolve the building section and collect the advantages. Following the dissolution of the construction company, the family began investing in real estate and became fairly rich.

Bernard rose fast through the ranks of the corporation, becoming director of development in 1974, CEO in 1977, and president in 1979, surpassing his father.
